- Isaac Low: you probably wont unless you are a comic yourself. The Starbucks sketch can only be appreciated with an understanding of alt comedy. Not something for everybody. It's always easier to do the standard double entendre but going the alternative route is very tricky. Not many people pull it off. The only reason Jerry Lewis managed to do it decades ago was because of the advent of musical technology which helped the slapstick timing of the performance pieces. The Starbucks sketch was slapstick but Tony Law isn't the best at it. Law went slapstick to casual most likely thinking that audiences are insiders in the comic world. That's a mistake on his part. Not everyone is a comic and you'll have to put up with their idiocy which is why not everyone can just afford to be themselves on stage. Robin Williams managed to find the alternative in American character comedy which is why he is one of the few who actually made an audience with that style of comedy. But Robin Williams isn't actually the best in Character comedy. There was no set up punchline but he is Robin Williams so he gets away with a lot. Not easy...

- Isaac Low: The alternative in Law''s performance was strictly average. Although I applaud his courage for not going the set up punchline route, it needs way more prep for the comic timing to work for slapstick alternatives. Verbalizing the obvious is a classic no-no for alternative. This is more of a stand up for me. I think it was too casual for a Saturday night audience. Always thought alternative was more disciplined than that. I.e. an incredible amount of kinesthetic talent is often demanded by its performers. Personally Tim Minchin is a great musician who can do alternative but Minchin is a talented musician who can put a certain amount of individuality into his performance with a quirky style. To me that is the best of alternatives right there bar none. I suggest Tim Minchin. Nevertheless, although Minchin does improv on his musicals the punchlines are not that heavy. Very often there is a fine line between punchlines and improvs. The closing must have the biggest punchline, and some of Minchin's performances were lacklustre for the finale. Then again, he is talented enough what more could you ask for.
